At Solar Power Experts we always try to assist where we can and help you to choose the best solar power solutions. Below is a list of frequently asked questions about residential solar power systems.
There are three main types of solar panel systems you can implement in your business:
Grid-Tied Solar Power System
Your grid connected solar system is still connected to the municipal grid and runs off sunlight without storage batteries. When there is no sunlight on the panel, your system will revert back to using municipal power.
Off Grid Solar Power System
This system is designed to work off the grid, independently from your electricity supplier. It is advisable with standalone solar power systems to have solar batteries installed to store electrical energy and used when there is no direct sunlight on the solar panels.
Solar Hybrid Systems
In this hybrid system, the solar panels will produce energy during the day for some or all of your needs and revert back to using the grid during the night. Added batteries give you backup power for power outages during the daytime.
This is very dependent on the type of solar power system you want to implement at your business premise, as well as the amount of roof space on hand.
A commercial solar power system will be designed according to the needs and goals for your business.

Any equipment like electric pumps or appliances that use electricity can be run off your solar energy system, however this will also be dependent on the system that you choose, as well as the amount of solar panels you are able to place on your rooftop.
There are two types of solar panels for business use:
- Monocrystalline Solar Panels
Made of a large crystal of silicon, monocrystalline solar panels efficiently absorb sunlight and convert into electricity. Because of this efficiency, these solar panels are preferred in lower light conditions than other solar panels.
- Polycrystalline Solar Panels
Polycrystalline solar panels consist of several amounts of small silicon crystals, and are slightly less efficient than monocrystalline solar panels but also less expensive.
This depends on your business energy needs, as well as the roof size you can cover with panels, and how much you can invest in your solar power system. Our Solar Power Experts will be able to guide you in determining what size and type of solar panel system will be best suited for your specific needs.
Roofs that face the North will receive the most exposure to sunlight. You can also install solar panels on North East and North West facing roofs, however these would be less effective as they would be exposed to shadow during the course of the day, providing less hours of sunlight to charge the batteries.
If you are concerned about the structural integrity of your business roof, it would be best to contact a structural engineer to review your building.
Yes, you will. South Africa’s National Treasury has implemented tax breaks to incentivise business owners to install their own electricity generation in the form of grid-tied, rooftop or ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. These can be installed on buildings, in parking lots, warehouses, factories, and farms.
According to Section 12B of the Income Tax Act (Act 58 of 1996):
- If a business installs a grid-tied solar PV system of less than 1 MW that is used for electricity generation by the business in the course of its operations, it qualifies for a 100% tax-deductible depreciation allowance in the first year of commissioning.
- For example, this means that if a business’s tax rate is 28% and payment is upfront, the business will receive a 28% nett discount on the purchase price of the system at the end of the tax year in which the system was installed and commissioned.
- For solar PV systems greater than 1 MW, full depreciation is spread over three years. This means the business receives tax incentives based on the depreciation of 50% of the capital cost in the year of commissioning, 30% in the subsequent year, and 20% in the third year.
